The Tank watch was designed by Louis Cartier, a third-generation iconoclast who is responsible for many of the Maison’s most recognizable shaped timepieces. He addressed the task of making a clock in the same way he approached the task of constructing a gem to be worn on the wrist. As a result, the form is given a lot of weight. The numerous elements of a timepiece, unlike a solid gem, posed a challenge to keeping precise shape.
Must de Cartier Tank is one of the most popular models in The Tank family, and its beginnings are worth mentioning. In 1977, Cartier launched the Must de Cartier Tank. Cases were fashioned of gold-plated sterling silver instead of precious metal.

Cartier gained a completely new consumer base as a result of this audacious action, which sent shockwaves across the industry at the time. Additional variants were created in a range of sizes, finishes, and dial colors in response to the early pieces’ success.
Cartier debuted the new Tank Must Steel series in 2021. Three stainless steel case sizes are offered, with a matching bracelet or a black leather strap as an alternative. The new Tank Must enhances its heritage namesake to full luxury status, with all the finishing touches one would expect from a modern Cartier watch.

The new Tank Must Steel collection is available in three case sizes; extra-large (41.0 x 31.0 x 8.4 mm), large (33.7 x 25.5 x 6.6 mm) and small (29.5 x 22.0 x 6.6 mm).
The beaded crown set with synthetic cabochon-shaped spinel, a silvered dial, and blued-steel hands are all shared by all three. The extra-large boasts flinqué etching in the dial center, a central-seconds hand, and a date aperture at the 6 o’clock position, among other characteristics.
The self-winding mechanical calibre 1847 MC is available inside the case. The large and small versions, on the other hand, are quartz-powered. (Again, this is in keeping with the original collection.) All cases are 3 bar (30 m / 100 ft) water resistant.
Cartier’s “QuickSwitch” interchangeable strap mechanism is also featured in this new line. A steel bracelet or a black grained calfskin strap is included with each of the three Tank Must variants. The leather straps of the big and small versions include a steel ardillon buckle as a homage to the original. A replaceable steel deployant clasp is included on the extra-large strap.
