It would be an understatement to say that Cartier has been bustling at Watches & Wonders 2023. The brand is booming thanks to a variety of fresh and appealing models that span all of the collections, including a gorgeous grande complexity pocket watch and a very alluring Cartier Privé collection that revives the Tank Normale.
Now, however, we’ll talk about the Tank Louis Cartier, the collection’s most iconic timepiece. Additionally, it is returning this year in two hand-wound, yellow gold versions with red and green lacquered dials.

The first model of the Cartier Tank, which was subsequently named Tank Normale, was created in 1917; however, the second incarnation of this watch may be its most iconic design. The Tank Louis Cartier watch, so named because of its distinctive aesthetic created by its vertical, narrow brancards and smooth angles, must be seen as a polished interpretation of the original rectangle idea.
The new model of Tank Louis Cartier features slim, curved brancards and a simple design, to bring back its iconic, understated appearance. It is primarily recognized for its traditional silver display with Roman numeral variants, which are graceful and refined in the end.
However, the company now offers versions with colored lacquered displays that recall the sartorial grace of the Must de Cartier designs from the 1970s. The new versions are encased in yellow gold, measuring 33.7mm by 25.5mm with a width of only 6.6mm. The traditional beaded crown is set with a blue sapphire cabochon.
The dial is the main spotlight of the new models. The simple design is provided by the green or dark red lacquer that features less indexing and marking on it. This stunning monochrome appearance is completed by a tone-on-tone semi-matte alligator strap. Only the hands, Swiss-made label, and logo are in gold.
This watch is powered by a custom-made calibre 1917 MC. This small, hand-wound movement has a 38-hour power reserve and beats at 3 Hz. It’s concealed behind a solid gold caseback.
